Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene has voiced her outrage over the treatment of the January 6 defendants, claiming that they are being treated like criminals in a jail.
“They’re treating these people like they’re actual criminals,” said Greene in a press conference on Thursday. “It’s ridiculous! They didn’t do anything wrong. They were just protesting the election results, exercising their right to free speech!”
Despite the fact that many of the defendants have been charged with serious crimes such as trespassing, destruction of property, and assault on law enforcement officers, Greene insists that they are being unfairly targeted.
“These are good, God-fearing Americans who were just trying to make their voices heard,” she said. “They shouldn’t be locked up like common criminals.”
In an effort to show her support for the defendants, Greene has even offered to visit them in jail and bring them homemade cookies.
“I want them to know that they have a friend in Congress,” she said. “I’ll do whatever it takes to make sure they’re treated fairly.”
When pressed about her own controversial statements and actions, including her support of QAnon and her past endorsement of violence against Democrats, Greene brushed off the criticism.
“That’s beside the point,” she said. “This is about standing up for what’s right. And what’s right is treating these January 6 defendants with the respect and dignity they deserve.”
As of press time, it’s unclear if any of the defendants have accepted Greene’s offer of cookies. However, it’s safe to say that her comments have once again landed her in hot water with her colleagues in Congress.
