Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has declared that April Fools’ Day will be cancelled this year, citing concerns about its “woke” implications.
According to a statement from the governor’s office, DeSantis believes that April Fools’ Day has become too “politically correct” and “sensitive” in recent years, and that the traditional pranks and jokes are no longer acceptable in today’s society.
“The woke left has ruined another cherished American tradition,” said DeSantis. “April Fools’ Day used to be a time for harmless pranks and good-natured humor, but now it’s just another excuse for cancel culture to run amok.”
The governor went on to say that he will be replacing April Fools’ Day with a new holiday called “Freedom Day,” which he says will celebrate the “unrestricted, unapologetic, and unwoke” American spirit.
“Freedom Day will be a time for all Floridians to exercise their God-given right to say and do whatever they want, no matter who it offends,” said DeSantis. “We’ll have parades, fireworks, and lots of offensive jokes, because that’s what freedom is all about.”
Reaction to DeSantis’ decision has been mixed, with some applauding his stance against political correctness, while others have accused him of trying to score political points with his conservative base.
One thing is for certain: this year, there will be no pranks, jokes, or hoaxes on April Fools’ Day in Florida. Instead, residents will be celebrating their newfound freedom to be as offensive as they want.
