NEED TO KNOW
- Man says cooking is cheaper than eating out, despite overwhelming evidence it isn’t.
- Shopping list included truffle oil, goat’s milk ricotta, and a $39 block of Parmesan.
- Leftovers will likely rot until they become a science fair exhibit.
Michael Drummond, 34, told friends he was “getting into cooking” after watching a 90-second pasta video online. By dinner, he had spent $248 on ingredients. His cart included truffle oil, artisanal ricotta, and Parmesan “aged longer than my first marriage.”
“I could’ve gone to Olive Garden,” Drummond said. “But then I wouldn’t have this jar of saffron I’ll definitely use again.” Guests described the pasta as fine. Privately, they agreed it tasted like butter and regret.
His kitchen now holds 17 spices he will never open again. A pasta maker already sits in a corner collecting dust. Drummond called the expense “an investment in my culinary journey,” before Googling how to make boxed mac and cheese taste better.
