Elon Musk Promises to Put Disney+ Back in Teslas if Disney Pretty Pleases Starts Advertising on X Again

Last updated: July 11, 2024 9:14 PM CT

SILICON VALLEY — Elon Musk has promised to reinstate Disney+ in Tesla vehicles on one peculiar condition: Disney must resume advertising on his social media platform, X (formerly Twitter), with a cherry on top. The peculiar proposal has ignited a lively debate over corporate power plays and the whims of billionaires.

The Disney+ Dilemma

Tesla owners were dismayed when Disney+ disappeared from their in-car entertainment systems earlier this year. The streaming service, which provided a plethora of beloved movies and TV shows, was a favorite feature among Tesla drivers, especially parents hoping to keep their kids entertained during long drives.

“We loved having Disney+ in the car,” said Emma Johnson, a Tesla Model S owner. “My kids would watch Frozen on repeat, and it made road trips a lot more bearable. Now I have to actually talk to them!”

Musk’s Proposal

Elon Musk, never one to shy away from a bit of corporate drama, took to X to announce his proposal. “Hey @Disney, let’s make a deal,” Musk tweeted. “Put your ads back on X, and I’ll put Disney+ back in Teslas. Pretty please with a cherry on top? 🍒”

The tweet quickly went viral, garnering millions of likes and a slew of confused and amused responses. It’s unclear whether Musk was serious or simply trolling, but his followers were entertained nonetheless.

The Advertising Fallout

Disney pulled its advertising from X earlier this year amid controversies surrounding the platform’s content moderation policies. The decision was part of a broader trend among major companies reassessing their advertising strategies on social media platforms perceived as volatile or mismanaged.

“We made the decision to pause our advertising on X to ensure our brand is aligned with platforms that uphold our values and standards,” a Disney spokesperson said at the time. “We continue to evaluate our partnerships on an ongoing basis.”

The Corporate Response

Disney has yet to respond publicly to Musk’s proposition, but industry analysts are divided on whether the entertainment giant will take the bait. On one hand, the reinstatement of Disney+ in Tesla vehicles could be seen as a win for both companies, potentially boosting subscriptions and appeasing Tesla owners. On the other hand, capitulating to Musk’s demands could set a precedent that Disney may prefer to avoid.

Social Media Buzz

The internet has, predictably, had a field day with the news. Memes and jokes about Musk’s tweet have flooded social media, with many users poking fun at the billionaire’s audacious negotiating style.

One popular meme shows Musk as a character from a Disney movie, holding out a Tesla-branded apple to Mickey Mouse with the caption, “Do we have a deal?” Another tweet humorously suggested, “Next up: Elon Musk promises to make Teslas fly if Netflix agrees to air SpaceX documentaries non-stop.”

Analysts Weigh In

Business analysts are intrigued by the potential implications of Musk’s proposal. “This is a classic Musk move,” said tech analyst Karen Hughes. “He loves to blur the lines between serious business and playful banter. Whether Disney will bite is another story, but the proposal alone is generating significant buzz, which is a win for X.”

Others, however, are more skeptical. “This could be seen as a desperate attempt to attract advertisers back to X,” commented media strategist Dan Roberts. “While the offer is creative, it underscores the challenges X is facing in retaining major brands. Disney’s response, or lack thereof, will be telling.”

The Waiting Game

As the world waits to see how Disney will respond, Tesla owners and Disney fans alike are left in suspense. Will Musk’s proposal be the start of a new chapter in corporate collaborations, or just another quirky footnote in the billionaire’s colorful career?
