In a move inspired by the success of the pitch clock in Major League Baseball, a local grocery store in Missouri has introduced an order clock at its deli counter. The innovative new system has already reduced average order times by a whopping 45 seconds.
“We’re really excited about this new development,” said store manager, Brian Shoemaker. “We saw how well the pitch clock worked in baseball and we thought, why not bring that same kind of efficiency to our deli counter?”
The order clock works by assigning each customer a number when they arrive at the deli counter. They then have a set amount of time to place their order, with the clock ticking down on a large digital display for all to see.
“If a customer goes over their allotted time, they have to give up their spot at the counter and pick a new number,” explained Shoemaker. “It might sound harsh, but it’s all about keeping things moving and ensuring everyone gets served as quickly as possible.”
According to Shoemaker, the response from customers has been overwhelmingly positive.
“People love it,” he said. “They love the sense of urgency it creates and the fact that they know exactly how long they have to place their order. Plus, with average order times down by almost a minute, everyone is getting their food faster.”
While some customers have expressed concern about feeling rushed or pressured to make their decisions quickly, Shoemaker insists that the system is all about efficiency and customer satisfaction.
“We’re not trying to rush anyone,” he said. “We just want to make sure that everyone gets their food as quickly and efficiently as possible. And so far, it seems to be working.”
Only time will tell whether other grocery stores will follow suit and introduce order clocks at their deli counters. But for now, the residents of Missouri can rest easy knowing that they can get their sandwiches and salads in record time at their local grocery store.
