Trump Attends Pennsylvania Farming Event, Threatens John Deere with Tariffs: “Never Liked Green and Yellow Anyway”

Last updated: September 25, 2024 7:11 AM CT

During a recent farming event in rural Pennsylvania, former President Donald Trump took time to listen to the concerns of local farmers. But in classic Trump fashion, the event took an unexpected turn when he set his sights on an unusual target: John Deere. Known for their iconic green and yellow tractors, John Deere quickly found itself in Trump’s crosshairs as he suggested they make a drastic change to their brand—or else.

“I never liked green and yellow anyway,” Trump announced to the crowd, standing in front of a row of classic John Deere equipment. “Frankly, they could do a lot better. They should change it to red and gold. Much more powerful. Much more American.”

The Tariff Threat: “Make Them Pay!”

But Trump didn’t stop at color preferences. He went on to threaten John Deere with tariffs, claiming that their “unpatriotic” color scheme was bad for business and bad for America. “We’re going to slap tariffs on them, folks,” Trump warned. “Big tariffs, unless they make the tractors red and gold. Can you imagine how beautiful they’d be? John Deere—red and gold, just like a winning team.”

The comment drew mixed reactions from the farmers in attendance, some laughing along, while others exchanged confused glances. But Trump, unfazed, continued with his vision. “Look, I’ve been around beautiful things all my life. Nobody knows beauty like I do. And believe me, a tractor should look as good as it works. Right now, green and yellow just isn’t cutting it.”

Farmers’ Reactions: A Red and Gold John Deere?

Farmers, many of whom rely on John Deere’s reliable and iconic equipment, were understandably taken aback by Trump’s proposed rebranding. “I mean, John Deere’s been green and yellow forever,” one farmer said. “It’s like Coca-Cola. You just don’t change it.”

Others, however, saw a humorous side to Trump’s comments. “Can you imagine a bright red tractor rolling through the fields? I guess if anyone can make that happen, it’s Trump,” another farmer joked.

But the suggestion of tariffs left many scratching their heads. “We rely on John Deere for just about everything out here,” said one concerned farmer. “The last thing we need is more costs. I think I’ll keep my green tractor, thanks.”

John Deere Responds

In response to Trump’s unexpected critique, John Deere released a brief statement. “John Deere has proudly worn green and yellow for over 180 years, and our customers continue to appreciate the legacy and quality those colors represent,” the statement read.

While the company refrained from directly addressing Trump’s tariff threat, they subtly reminded the public that their focus remains on building reliable machinery, regardless of color.

The Tariff Tactic: Trump’s Favorite Weapon

Threatening tariffs isn’t new for Trump. Throughout his presidency, tariffs were a go-to weapon in his trade wars, often aimed at foreign companies. This time, however, his target is a beloved American brand. Some analysts believe Trump is simply playing to the crowd, knowing that his base tends to support strong, bold statements—especially those tied to “winning” imagery like red and gold.

“He’s using the same playbook as always,” one political analyst commented. “Take something that’s working fine, claim it’s broken, then offer a flashy, over-the-top solution.”

Is Red and Gold the Future?

Whether or not John Deere will heed Trump’s advice and rebrand its tractors remains to be seen. But for now, farmers across America can rest easy knowing their trusty green and yellow machines will keep rolling through the fields. Still, in the unpredictable world of Trump’s influence, who knows—maybe we’ll see a limited-edition red and gold John Deere one day.
